Hanfu is a representative of traditional Chinese clothing, originating from the Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD), and its design, color, pattern and material all contain deep cultural meanings. Hanfu emphasizes on “rites” and “ceremonies”, which are not only daily wear, but also symbols of identity, status and social roles.
For example, the “robe” in Hanfu symbolizes nobility and stability, while the “skirt” embodies the softness and introspection of women. The loose design and elegant lines of Hanfu are also in line with the Chinese culture's aesthetic concept of pursuing simplicity, nature and harmony.
The relationship between Chinese culture, Chinese image and Hanfu
Chinese culture has a long history and rich connotation, from Confucianism to Taoist philosophy, to calligraphy, painting, music and other art forms, all of which embody the Chinese people's unique understanding of nature, society and life.
Under this cultural system, dress, as an important part of culture, reflects the spirituality of the times and the ethical order of society.
In the shaping of China's image, Chinese dress is not only a symbol of traditional culture, but also an expression of modern people's confidence in traditional culture.
In many cultural events, festivals, weddings and other occasions, the wearing of Hanfu has become a way to reflect national identity and cultural pride. Modern Hanfu is not only a retro expression, it also integrates modern aesthetic and functional innovation, becoming a cultural symbol combining tradition and modernity.
Hanfu Culture Goes Abroad
Not only Chinese students, but also Australian locals accept Chinese Hanfu and are willing to try and experience Chinese culture.
As Chinese culture spreads globally, Hanfu has also become part of “cultural diplomacy”. Through various cultural exchange activities and overseas Chinese schools, Chinese dress has become a window for foreigners to understand Chinese culture.
Especially in some international events, the appearance of Hanfu often attracts attention and discussion, and becomes an important symbol to show the traditional Chinese aesthetics and cultural values.
On October 1, 2023, the 5th Rite of Passage Hwa Hsia Global Hanfu Model Competition - Melbourne Overseas Competition Final held at the University of Melbourne allowed us to witness a feast of Hwa Hsia Hanfus. Models wearing exquisite Hanfus perfectly blended ancient traditions with modern fashions with unique elegance and self-confidence. Each contestant presented a breathtaking style that was unforgettable.
It's not just about putting on a dress, it's about spreading Chinese culture
On November 27th, 2024, the Confucius Institute for Tourism team arrived at Southport State School on the Gold Coast with several large boxes of Chinese clothing, bringing a special clothing show to the students of the school's 2024 Chinese Optimization Class.
The event was planned by Nicci Mcdonald, the school's Chinese teacher, as an incentive for the Chinese language class. The school's top class of 2024 was given the opportunity to try on Chinese national costumes at the end of the semester, in order to stimulate the students' interest in learning the Chinese language and their motivation.
After the activity, Ms. Nicci said, “The Chinese dress fitting was a rare experience for the children, they behaved very positively and became more interested in Chinese language and Chinese culture. Thanks to the support and help of the Confucius Institute for Tourism, our students gained a special memory at the end of the semester.”
